Myrna's Pithy Observations and Notes

Myrna's Observations - 2025 September 14

September is Happy Cat Month
True Words by Popeye
You don't stop having fun when you get old...
You get old when you stop having fun!

Myrna's Folklore for the Season -

2025 September 7

Folklore for the Season
- Heavy September rains bring drought.
- September dries up ditches or breaks down bridges.
- Married in September's golden glow, smooth and serene your life will go.
- If the storms of Septemberr clear off warm, the storms of the willowing winter will be warm.
- Fair on September 1st, fair for the month.
There are flowers enough in the summertime,
More flowers than I can remember -
But none with the purple, gold, and red
That dye the flowers of September !
---- Mary Howitt (1799-1888)

Myrna's Some Funnies - 2025 August 31

WARNING:
Do NOT give Rice Krispies to young children.
I ate them as a child.
Now when I stand up, I snap, crackle, and pop!
I hired a kid to pain my porch.
When he came back to get paid, he said, "By the way, that was a BMW, not a Porsche."
Just before I pass away, I'm going to swallow a whole bag of popcorn kernals... Just to make the cremation a bit more exciting
I renamed my toilet Jim instead of John...
People are really impressed when I tell them I go to the Jim every morning;

Myrna's Did You Know These Hidden Facts? - 2025 August 24

There are so many kinds of apples that if you ate a new one every day, it would take over 20 years to try them all.
You can survive without eating for weeks, but you will only live 11 days without sleeping.
People who laugh a lot are healthier than those who don't.
Laziness and inactivity kill just as many people as smoking.
The human brain has a capacity to store 5 times as much information as Wikipedia.
Our brain uses the same amount of power as a 10-watt light bulb!
Our body gives enough heat in 30 minutes to boil 1.5 liters of water!
The ovum egg is the largest cell,m and the sperm is the smallest cell.
Stomach acid (concentrated HCl [Hydrogen chloride]) is enough to dessolve razor blades.

Myrna's Things You Never Questioned As A Kid (But Everyone Understood - 2025 August 10

If the streetlights came on, it meant time to go home.  It didn't matter where you were or what you were doing - when they lit up,, your day was over.
You always gave the bigger piece of cake to a guest.  Even if you wanted it, that's just how respect worked at home.
You never sat in dad's chair.  Every house had one.  Everyone knew it.  No one had to say it.
When a grown-up said, "Because I said so," that was the end.  There was no debate, no explanation - just obedience.
If someone called during dinner, you didn't answer.  Dinner time was sacred.  The phone could wait.  Family came first.

Myrna's Always Makes Me Laugh - 2025 August 3

Teacher: How old is your father?
Kid: He is 6 years old.
Teacher: What?  How is this possible?
Kid: He became a father only when I was born.

Teacher: Maria, go to the map and find North America.
Maria: Here it is.
Teacher: Correct. Now, class, who discovered America?
Class: Maria.

Teacher: Glenn, how do you spell crocodile?
Glenn: K-R-O-K-O-D-I-L-E
Teacher: NO, that's wrong.
Glenn: Maybe it is wrong, but you asked me how I spell it.

Teacher: Donald, what is the chemical formula for water?
Donald: HIJKLMNO
Teacher: What are you talking about?
Donald: Yesterday you said it was H to O.

Myrna's Thoughts on the Fair - 2025 July 27

Montana State Fair will be in town from Friday July 25 - Saturday, August 2, 2025
Fairs are large theme-based events held to promote and present agriculture, commercial, industrial and artistic exhibits to fair goers while also providing the fun and amusement of carnivals.  The traveling carnival began in America in the late 1800's.  The first annual fair in the American colonies was held in 1641 in New Amsterdam (now New York City) to showcase farm products of the local area. The USA's first state fair was held in Syracuse, New York in September 1841.  The first time that fair goers ate hot dogs and ice cream was during the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904, thus coining these two foods as the world's first "fast foods".  The Ferris Wheel was invented by George W. Ferris for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago.  Cotton Candy was orriginally called "Fairy Floss" and was invented in 1897,
Go enjoy a concert, rodeo a corn dog or an old-fashioned lemonade at the Montana State Fair!

The Great Falls Municipal Band, originally known as the Black Eagle Band, embarks on its 132nd consecutive season in 2025.  Although sponsored in its infancy by the Boston and Montana Smelter Company, the band reorganized in 1905 and acquired its current name.

Over the years, the Municipal Band has been in demand to play for assorted dignataries, special events, and dedication ceremonies.  In the late 1930;s the band played at the dedication of Fort Peck Dam which was attended by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Dedication ceremonies in Great Falls have included the dams on the Missouri River, the Warden Bridge, and both the old and new airports.  The band also performed for the visits of John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.
